Questa famosa salita è considerata il passo carrabile più alto del mondo, con una altitudine dichiarata dal BRO (Ente stradale indiano) di 5602 mt e addirittura 5682 dal Guinness dei Primati.

In realtà non è così , infatti , dopo accurate misurazioni , è stato stabilito da una ricerca effettuata con moderni sistemi GPS da un team di ricercatori spagnoli che l'altezza reale sia di 5359 mt.

Tale valore è superato da passi in Tibet e nel Karakorum ma non è ben certo di quanto essi siano realmente carrozzabili; resta il fatto che si tratta di uno dei passi più alti del globo.

Essendo una strada anche ad uso militare la pendenza è costante e mai impegnativa ma la lunghezza esasperante (40 km dalla rotonda di Leh), gli ultimi 13-14 km sterrati e soprattutto l'estrema rarefazione dell'aria fa sì che il ciclista debba procedere ad una velocità dimezzata rispetto a quella sostenibili sul livello del mare.

Il paesaggio è aspro e severo, senza vegetazione e il passo è visibile praticamente dall'inizio della salita.

This famous climb is considered the world's highest motorable pass, with an altitude declared by the indian BRO (Border Roads Organization) of 5602 mt above sea level and even 5682 mt from the Guinness Book of World Records.

In reality it is not, in fact, after accurate measurements, it has been established from research done with modern GPS systems by a team of Spanish researchers that the real height is 5359 meters.

This value is exceeded by passes in Tibet and Karakorum but is not quite certain to what they are really motorable; the fact remains that it is one of the highest passes of the world.

Being a road also used for military purposes the slope is constant and never tiring but the exasperating length (40 km from Leh roundabout), the last 13-14 kilometers of gravel roads and especially the extremely thin air at such altitudes means that the cyclist should proceed at a half speed that sustainable at sea level.

The landscape is harsh and severe, with no vegetation and the pass is visible practically from the beginning of the road.

At the end, a great emotion and the highest cafeteria of the world!
